Prof. Antonino Saggio one of the greatest contemporary architects participated in one of the architectural conferences last year in Iran. He considered the architecture of entrance building of Tehran University better that the one in Sapienza of Roma and one of the successful works in the contemporary architecture of Iran. Antonino Saggio is an architect and a researcher which many of his projects has been activated in Italian cities, He considers the success of architecture is due to the importance of environment and believes that construction in spaces like the seaside is the death of architecture.
Saggio, after a week of his journey in Iran had a conversation with Iran newspaper , describing Tehran architecture is oriented in to the city’s choking.
What is your opinion about architecture of Tehran and what is your suggestion for this city to achieve a sustainable architecture?
Tehran is a city of modern architecture with extremely high density buildings, which means you are short of breathing spaces or let’s rephrase it the construction in the city has obstacled the respiration and the only way to save the city from the disaster is to move toward the Green line infrastructure.” Green line “architecture is a new method which many of developed countries is moving forward to it, green line itself is a sustainable architecture.
What is your definition of sustainable architecture?
A sustainable architecture have five principles, first one is the definition of the space as a multifunctional one. Today calling the spaces like residential complex or commercial complex is outdated.
The second one is creating green spaces in the city and the third is to utilize the IT specialization in architecture and create spaces proper for IT innovations. The fourth is to elevate the quality of transportation which could resolve many of architectural and environmental problems of the city. And at last the fifth is the newest movement which Europeans calls it “Global crisis” which means the fading of the traditional architectural methods. Today’s definition of beauty is in Information Technology not in symmetry and ecc,.. Architecture has become a very soft skin that we should take care of it.
How do you imagine the future architecture of Iran?
The future architecture of Iran is to achieve the newest technology in construction, but I can see that today in Iran this has been less considered in the cities and mostly in the Capital. But it’s inevitable that achieving the sustainable architecture should be aimed in the future architecture of Iran.
How is possible to use the technology of other nations and make it vernacular?
In one word, I should say each successful experience can become native, technology of the new materials has been developed so much lately but still it hasn’t find its place in the architecture of Iran. I see very modern cars in Tehran like Porsche which has the latest technology of construction in the world on the other hand there are very old cars which had been outdated in other countries for years. This imbalance of environmental protection is one of the important reasons that the country can’t achieve the sustainable architecture.
In sustainable architecture all urban organs should work parallel in order t improve equally toward the green belt architecture. The infrastructure which are been used in Iran is going back to the fifty years ago in developed countries, for example the mosque which is constructed in Seljuk period belongs to the Iran in Seljuk period though to project a new mosque today we can’t use the Seljuk methods to design it cause the human requirements are different.
How can the Italian Architectural education influence the Persian one?
Today we are living in a global village and we exchange our information and culture, this doesn’t relate to one country. The idea should be global in order to be improved if not it is going to end soon, like the new ideas for the urban designs which has been failed for years in other countries but unfortunately still are been used in Iranian cities. This means that Iranians have not learned from the experience of other countries or don’t even see them so they pay a lot for this failure.
